More social marketing tips and business advice from expert Hilary Topper:
Hi, this is Hilary Topper from HJMT Communications, and this week's show is going to focus on how governmental agencies use social media to get their message out to the public.
For starters, look at President Obama. He won the election by being on Facebook, Twitter, videos, video podcasts, etcetera.
I mean he was all over social media, and he really engaged his audience. And people understood him, felt like they knew him, and that's why he got in. When he became president, he's talked to other governmental agencies and have recommended that they become transparent, so that people know what's going on with our government.
For example, I was talking to the Air Force the other day, when I was working on my book on social media, and they were telling me that a situation happened with Twitter where an air carrier went down, somebody had Tweeted that an air carrier went down in Texas somewhere and there was a big explosion. CNN, CNBC, and some of the other media picked up the story, but the Air Force found out that it wasn't true.
So they were able to squash the story within 52 minutes of the story being launched, and they did it all through Twitter.
So it really is very powerful, the social media. The most important thing with social media is be transparent. Try to be real and authentic. Talk to your community and understand what their needs are and really listen to them. That's the point here.
