Emerging trends in social media: online business advice from Louis Gray

Featuring...

  • Louis Gray
Silicon Valley Blogger for technology geeks...
According to Silicon Valley social marketing specialist Louis Gray, the future holds a world of new possibilities for social media:

One thing they were seeing about social media is that it's turning into, what I believe, is infrastructure. Five, 10, 15 years ago, we would be talking about the advent of the worldwide web, and email, and how amazing these two products were. Today, nobody comes to you and talks to you about worldwide web and email, because it's assumed that you have it. I believe strongly that social media will be something that's assumed that you have it, going forward. Social media is going to be integrated in each aspect of business. Be it marketing, public relations, customer service, and sales. To the point that nobody talks about it anymore, they just do it. What's happening in the technology side is not only a social media becoming ubiquitous, but it is speeding up. RSS is going faster. Technologies like Twitter let you distribute your information out to tens of thousands immediately, with just 140 characters. You can publish video. You can bookmark. You can upload images. And it's all happening in real time. As social networks like Facebook and YouTube become some of the biggest content repositories on the planet.

One of the biggest things I'm excited about is seeing the adoption and embracing of standards. One of the things that Facebook and Twitter and Google and FriendFeed and all of these companies are trying to do, is have open standards so you can communicate with one another. So that one update on one platform can end up on another. And what's happening over time as people adopt these new technologies and these new open standards, is people are building out APIs. So new programs can be built. And there's an ecosystem to really do things that we haven't even considered on social networks in a new way. And take advantage of the massive market attention and potential that is there with the technology as it becomes growing and available.
